E-commerce company eBay has recently announced that it would be launching a service or a program that will give sellers a chance to have their products or goods verified as original or authentic. This will benefit resellers or merchants who offer customers high-end goods or luxury items.
In the past, sellers who focus on offering branded items or high-end items such as those coming from high-end brands have faced issues in selling such items due to the number of fake or inauthentic goods which are present in the market. One of the platform’s top products and most popular goods include handbags.
eBay’s new service which will cater to high-end sellers will be offering the authentication service particularly on bags and wallets that are sold by brands such as Chanel, Burberry, Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Gucci, Prada, Fendi, Balenciaga, Goyard, Valentino, and Celine.
The company hinted the launch of the authentication program during the beginning of the year stating that the service would be launched before the end of the year. Although the platform alone offered customers a chance to get their hands on more affordable or pre-owned branded luxury items through resellers, some have faced issues and doubts on possibly receiving counterfeits or knock-offs instead.
The new service will not only help the company in the fighting of merchants who sell counterfeit items but also increase the market of the company to the higher-end and therefore bring more sellers to start offering a wider array of items through the site. The service can be accessed through the seller listing their item on the website then having the item shipped off to eBay to be tested for verification. Although sellers can now access the program, it will be made available to business sellers in the near future.
eBay has reportedly partnered with professional authenticators which will take photos of the authentic items particularly a handbag or a wallet and have it forwarded to the potential buyer.
Currently, investors are optimistic regarding the company’s earnings which will be released after the closing bell on Wednesday. eBay is currently known to have been increasing its efforts in attracting more customers and sellers as well. eBay which has gained 28.3% in its shares year to date currently has around 171 million active buyers. The company is expected to post a revenue of around $1.87 billion for the third quarter.
